TWIN studies have shown that people with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder have changes in gene activity caused by their environment. What you eat plays into your health over time. Eliminating toxins is also a key factor to better health. While this article leaves some middle ground, my experience is that the conclusions are generally correct.
